Frequently Asked Questions Frequently Asked Questions
What is a glycerite? a fluid extract of an herb or other medicinal substance made using glycerin as the majority of the fluid extraction medium. We use 99.9% food grade glycerin sourced from palm. They provide an alcohol-free alternative for children as well as adults who can't consume alcohol for health or personal reasons. Glycerites take a different pathway in the liver than alcohol and absorbs at a slower rate. As a result (and a potentially added benefit), glycerites do not affect blood sugar levels as much as tinctures do. They are used to extract some saponins, tannins, water soluble compounds, flavinoids, mucilage and some alkaloids.
What is an oxymel? a mixture of honey and vinegar, historically used as a medicine. The name comes from the Greek word “oxymeli,” which translates directly to “acid and honey.” It’s very shelf stable. Vinegar’s acidity breaks down cell walls and extracts minerals and alkaloids, while honey draws out moisture-soluble compounds and adds its own antimicrobial properties. Together, they cover a broader range of plant chemistry than either would alone. Oatstraw contains calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, iron and manganese. Elderberry contains potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc.
What is an adaptogen? a natural substance considered to help the body adapt to stress and to exert a normalizing effect upon bodily processes. These are primarily found in the tea concentrate blend. Hawthorn also fits in this category.
What is a nervine? an herb used to calm the nerves. Mint, skullcap, lemon balm, lavender, and rose are all nervines found in our blends.
What is an elixir? a mixture of herbal components made for your benefit. Elixir has roots in the practice of alchemy; it was used in the Middle Ages as the word for a substance believed to be capable of changing base metals into gold. Today, it is used generally for anything thought capable of remedying ills or difficulties, be they physical or otherwise.
Where do you source your ingredients? we primarily source our herbs from trusted bulk, organic sources for herbs. Some of them are from local growers or are wildcrafted, harvested in nature by our hands.
